A dental practice can refuse service to a patient in certain situations, but they must do so with a valid reason and cannot discriminate based on factors like race, religion, or disability; if they do refuse service, they should provide the patient with information about why and offer referrals to other dental professionals where appropriate.
Key points to remember:
-
Ethical considerations:
While dental practices have the right to decline patients, they should do so ethically and not based on discriminatory factors.
-
Valid reasons for refusal:
-
Beyond scope of practice: If the required treatment falls outside the dentist's area of expertise, they can refer the patient to a specialist.
-
Unmanageable behaviour: If a patient's behaviour presents significant safety concerns for the staff or other patients.
-
Non-compliance with treatment plan: If a patient repeatedly fails to follow treatment recommendations.
-
Payment issues: If a patient has a history of not paying bills
-
Lack of attendance: If a patients has a history of missing or cancelling appointments without providing 48hours notice, this is deemed as a breech of our terms and conditions and we reserve the right to refuse/block a booking in these cases.
